Claire Oliver Gallery has announced representation of American textile artist Carolyn Mazloomi. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1948, Mazloomi studied aviation science in college and began her career as an aerospace engineer. She began teaching herself how to quilt in the 1970s after becoming inspired by a chance encounter with a quilt at a market.
Mazloomi mobilises her quilting practice to tell the stories of contemporary African Americans and to address social justice issues. Her quilts are in the collections of dozens of influential museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Art and Design in New York the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Museum of the American West in Los Angeles.
