Multidisciplinary visual artist Gio Swaby, here in the second stop for her first solo museum exhibition, often begins her work with photo portraits, used as a sort of sketch. She then reinterprets the photographs in textiles, highlighting the subjects' hair and clothing in often life-size, empowering creations that Swaby calls "love letters to Black women." Swaby, who grew up in the Bahamas with a seamstress mother, says the title of her show, "Fresh Up," is a Bahamian phrase used to compliment someone's style or confidence.
