I folded the night sky into the form of a lotus, a symbol of transformation. The constellations of my natal chart wrap the surface of the flower’s petals. It is something at once vast and yet personal. The cosmos is never beyond our grasp but intimately made in every moment. Here the lotus’s seed pod is replaced with the funnel of a black hole as a metaphor for Buddhist notions of nothingness. Whether the forming and unforming of a mandala offering, or the transformation of the self, everything made must also be unmade.
The form of this piece is based on the round mandala offering pan, with the stand as the pan and the mosaic elements and roots as the jeweled offerings.
